Town and Country - plenty to see and do in both

Exmoor
The principal town of North Devon with its Victorian Pannier market (Tuesdays and Fridays) reflecting its glorious past when the railway brought many visitors to holiday here, Barnstaple still has much to offer.  The new bridge has removed much traffic from the town and you can wander down the Strand, see Queen Anne’s walk and the Old Custom house (now a restaurant) and the re-designed ‘Square’ with its clock tower and museum and Tourist Information Centre.  The Leisure and Tarka centres across the river have facilities for swimming and tennis. The High Street and Green Lanes cater for all tastes, as do the cafes and restaurants in the town.

Woody Bay and coastline beyond
From Barnstaple you can go up the coast ( good family beaches at Putsborough, Woolacombe)  Go to Exmoor: railway enthusiasts can visit several railways, at Woody Bay, or Exmoor, or the West Somerset Steam Railway; there are theme parks, miles of country for walking.  You can go southwards to Instow, easily reached by cycling along the Tarka trail, beach, North Devon Yacht club.  Bideford (home to the Kathleen and May).  Torrington (Civil War town with castle and views, Dartington Glass factory and NO Tesco store so small shops still survive).  Westward Ho! Famous pebble ridge and beach, very windy, historic Golf club

Rosemoor Gardens in Autumn
We have many interesting and well-known gardens nearby, such as Marwood Gardens and the RHS Garden at Rosemoor, near Torrington, and further afield in Cornwall are the lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.

There are also National Trust properties such as Arlington Court, near Barnstaple, Knightshayes, Tiverton, and large areas of National Trust land to enjoy.
